Mahdiye 9-year-old and her 11-year-old cousin Rafik smoke crystal, a very pure form of heroin. Mahdiye says that when she is not using heroin in a single day, she feels the pain in her legs. She began taking the drug two years ago with her parents who are already drug addicts too. The latest US State Department survey on drug use in Afghanistan says the number of adult drug users could exceed 1.3 million, out of an estimated population of up to 30 million, with nearly 300,000 children affected but the numbers are higher than estimated by US State Department. According to the UNODC, the number of drug users in Afghanistan grew by 53 percent from 2005 to 2010.
